Looking for the challenge of a lifetime? Wanting to go the extra mile to help children with eye cancer? Then join Team CHECT on its first ever trek challenge – across the Sahara Desert.

The challenge
Your CHECT challenge is a four-day hike through this ever-changing landscape, starting from M’hamid, the gateway of the desert and climbing to the top of the Chigaga Dunes to witness the desert sunrise. The days will be hot and the trekking will be tough but you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking landscapes as you follow the camel trains transporting your luggage.

Along the way you will visit a nomad encampment to experience their unique way of life and if you’re lucky catch a glimpse of local women making palm oil at the side of the road.

The Sahara Desert is one of nature’s wonders and has always mystified people with its vast stretches of sand. It covers around 9,000,000 square kilometres stretching from the Red Sea to the outskirts of the Atlantic Ocean and shares it boundaries with the Atlas Mountains and Mediterranean Sea.

Join our team
The trek is from February 19-24, 2016 – you’ll need a deposit of £199 and then we ask you to raise £1,700 or you can self fund your trip at £850 and raise as much you are able to. Anyone over the age of 17 can take part. The trek is designed to be tough but achievable providing you have put in the training beforehand. The fitter you are the more enjoyable it will be. Guide dogs are welcome providing certain conditions are met.

Make a difference
£850 would fund a regional day out bringing together families and individuals affected by Rb to share experiences, benefit from peer support and for children to meet others with a vision impairment or artificial eye(s).

Speaking from experience
Rich L, 2014 trekker said:

The camp at night was stunning – I saw the brightest stars that I’ve ever seen in my life – it was epic! The camp was all set up when we arrived and the food was phenomenal. We had a main mess tent where we ate and the group could chill out – some people sat around chatting, others sat on a carpet on the ground playing cards – it was idyllic.

As we watched the sunrise it was very, very moving. It was the peak of the trip and everyone had their charity t-shirts on; some were doing the trek for incredibly personal reasons and most people were raising money for charities very close to their hearts. It was a very special time with a very special group of people.
